Moc Chau

You will know you're approaching the sprawling market town of Moc Chau by the presence of black-and-white dairy cows, originally imported from Holland, wandering across the road. Much of the area is devoted to dairy farming, so be sure to try out some of the famously rich yoghurt, ice-cream or Moc Chau-branded chocolate bars. Be aware that during the coldest months, January and February, night-time temperatures can fall to –3°C (27°F). Dien Bien Phu

The capital of Dien Bien province, Dien Bien Phu lies on the east bank of the Nam Rom River (Song Nam Rom) at the northern end of the Muong Thanh valley. This was the site of a 57-day siege – the famous Battle of Dien Bien Phu – which brought an ignominious end to French colonialism in Asia. It is encircled by steep green hills from which tens of thousands of Viet Minh troops launched their assault on the French garrisons in 1954.

Visitors can visit a reconstruction of General de Castries’s main command bunker, set amid a litter of rusty tanks and artillery. Not far away, A1 Hill, known as ‘Eliane 2’ to the French, was the scene of fierce fighting and is now a war memorial dedicated to the Viet Minh who died here.

On the edge of the downtown area, the Museum of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (Nha Trung Bay Thang Lich Su Dien Bien Phu) has black-and-white battle photos, an illuminated electronic model of the valley and battle positions, and a collection of Chinese, American and French weapons. Across the street is a Viet Minh Cemetery, where some of the Viet Minh soldiers killed in the battle are buried.

Towering over town from its vantage position at D1 Hill is the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument. Unveiled in 2004, this huge bronze statue measures 12.6m (41ft) and weighs 220 tonnes. It depicts three soldiers standing atop the French garrison, one holding a flag, another a gun, and the third a child with flowers. On the flag is written: Quyet chien, quyet thang (Determined to fight, determined to win).

Lai Chau province

Wedged in between China to the north and Laos to the west, Lai Chau province was once known for its wildlife, including tigers, but sadly this is now hugely diminished (with no tiger sighting for several years) due to rampant deforestation, slash-and-burn farming and the lucrative trade in illegal animal products.

Running due north of Dien Bien Phu, Highway 12 connects with the historic town of Muong Lay (formerly known as Lai Chau – confusingly, there is now a new Lai Chau), some 104km (65 miles) away. The surroundings are striking: jagged, unforgiving peaks set against dense tiers of thick forest. The road into town is in good condition but, during heavy rains between May and August, landslides can cause serious delays.

The new capital of Lai Chau province is 150km (93 miles) to the northeast: Lai Chau town, formerly known as Tam Duong, bustles with new shops and hotels. Besides visiting the market – frequented by White Hmong and Flower Hmong, White Thai and Black Thai, Dao Khau and Giay hill tribes – travellers can visit a a number of ethnic--minority villages that are only accessible by motorbike.

Thông tin từ một số siêu thị điện máy tại Hà Nội cho biết, số lượng khách hàng tìm mua máy dieu hoa nhiet do đang tăng mạnh từng ngày. Những ngày đầu tháng 3/2011, số lượng máy điều hoà bán ra đã tăng hơn tới 20% so với tháng trước. Đặc biệt các sản phẩm điều hoà thế hệ mới sử dụng công nghệ biến tần (Inverter) siêu tiết kiệm điện loại công suất nhỏ: 9.000 BTU, 10.000 BTU, 12.000 BTU… rất hút khách, có đông người quan tâm.

Các sản phẩm dieu hoa tu dung sử dụng công nghệ biến tần đã xuất hiện trên thị trường từ vài năm trước, tuy nhiên số lượng còn ít và giá cả cao nên tiêu thụ không nhiều. Bước sang năm 2011 khi giá điện tăng cao, nhiều người tiêu dùng quan tâm hơn đến những sản phẩm tiết kiệm điện và giá bán điều hoà biến tần cũng cạnh tranh hơn các năm trước. Chính vì vậy nó đã làm nên những thay đổi lớn trên thị trường điện lạnh.

Bộ phận cảm ứng sẽ điều chỉnh công suất hoạt động theo nhiệt độ trong phòng nên máy vẫn tiêu hao điện ít hơn.
Theo các doanh nghiệp, giá điều hoà biến tần bước sang đầu năm 2011 đã giảm từ 10 đến 20% so với 2010. Hiện sản phẩm công suất 9.000 BTU của các hãng như dieu hoa daikin, dieu hoa midea, dieu hoa panasonic, LG, SamSung… chỉ khoảng 6-7 triệu đồng một máy, chênh lệch hơn 1 triệu đồng so với hàng sử dụng công nghệ thông thường. Đây chính là những lý do giúp cho máy điều hoà biến tần đang tiêu thụ mạnh, chiếm số lượng lớn tại nhiều cửa hàng, siêu thị trên toàn quốc.

Các hãng như Panasonic, đến LG, Samsung, Daikin, Nikko… đều lên kế hoạch đưa sản phẩm mới ra thị trường, hy vọng làm thoả mãn khách hàng và chiếm lĩnh thị phần lớn. Theo nhận định của các chuyên gia, thời gian tới điều hoà nhiệt độ công nghệ biến tần sẽ có lượng tiêu thụ tăng mạnh và chiếm lĩnh toàn bộ thị trường điện lạnh, thay thế cho điều hoà công nghệ thông thường.

Tam Dao Hill Station

To satisfy the hordes of domestic tourists, who largely come for the cooler climate and blaring karaoke, there's a reasonable amount of development and construction going on -- when this will settle down remains unclear.

Most of Tam Dao was destroyed by the Viet Minh in their war with the French but you can still see a few relics of the French presence here, including the empty pool and a few of the more dilapidated villas. But the villas are all going the way of the dodo and their more modern replacements are far from charming.

Best described as a half fishbowl wedged onto a hilltop, Tam Dao Hill Station backs onto a large pine forest. The centre of town is marked by the park, with the com pho places and the large hotels behind it.

Sitting over the drop onto the plains sits a decrepit, rundown hotel, from the roof of which a splendid view can be enjoyed of the plains below. As you sit there, you can imagine the balls and parties that would have been held on this rooftop back when the French still ran the place.

A new golf course and villa complex is being built on the road up to Tam Dao's peak. At present it offers nine holes with plans to complete the other nine before October 2006. It represents quite a spectacle contrasting bright pitch perfect lawns and greens with the hills overlooking the course. Conical hatted caddies can accompany you as you putt around the course and although incomplete it offers some fantastic golf for enthusiasts eager to hit a small white ball away from themselves. Final plans for the resort include a professional pro shop, resort-style hotel, villas, restaurants and shops.
